The Aging Population, Alzheimer's and Other Dementias:Law and Public Policy

Course # 91:622
Prof. Josephine Gittler & Dr. Kathleen Buckwalter
University of Iowa College of Law

The US population is aging rapidly. Aging is a major risk factor for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and other dementias leading to memory loss and decline in other cognitive functions. As a result the number of older individuals with some form of dementia is rising dramatically. At some point these individuals lose their capacity to make decisions about their living situation, financial matters and health care; they are vulnerable to financial exploitation, abuse and neglect because of their cognitive impairment; and they generally require long term and costly care over a period of years.

The Colloquium will first address the legal and other needs of the aging population and the basics of AD and other dementias. It will then address selected public policy and legal issues related to the aging population and the increase in AD and other dementias.

Schedule

The Colloquium met on Thursdays, from 2:00-4:15 p.m. from January 12th to April 26th, 2012.
