Initiatives for CMI
Initiative on Health Care
CMI’s Program on Health Care has as its focus the promotion of better solutions to actual and potential disputes involving the financing, organization and delivery of health services. Such disputes include but are not limited to disputes between and among health care insurers and providers, disputes between health care insurers and consumers, medical malpractice disputes, workplace disputes in health care settings, and end of life decision making.
Initiative on Aging
CMI’s Initiative on Aging has as its focus the promotion of better solutions to disputes involving the aging population. Such conflicts include but are not limited to those related to living arrangements for and care of older individuals, surrogate decision making for older individuals (e.g. health care power of attorney, financial power of attorney, conservatorship, guardianship) and end of life decision making.
Initiative on Disability
CMI’s Initiative on Disability has as its focus the promotion of better solutions to disputes involving children with special needs and their families and individuals with disabilities.
Projects
Alternative Dispute Prevention and Resolutions Systems in Managed Care Settings
CMI conducted a project, funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, HRSA, Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that applied and incorporated principles of alternative dispute resolution into managed care settings to prevent and resolve disputes involving patients and their families, health care providers and administrators and third party payers. A major product of the project was the development and pilot testing of a curricula on a problem solving approach to conflicts for health professions, early intervention personnel and parents of children with special health care needs. CMI continues to offer education and training opportunities utilizing these curricula.
Models for Comprehensive Conflict Management Systems in Managed Care Settings
CMI administered a project, funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, HRSA, Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that developed models for comprehensive conflict management systems, with a dispute prevention as well as a dispute resolution component, in managed care settings.
